Why is Composting So Cool?
Think of composting as recycling for your food! When you compost, you take stuff like fruit peels and dry leaves and let nature turn them into super-healthy dirt. This new dirt is called compost, and it's like a vitamin shake for plants, helping them grow big and strong.
- It feeds the plants: Gardens LOVE compost.
- It helps the Earth: Less trash goes to the big landfill, which makes our planet happier.
- It's science in your backyard: You get to watch tiny bugs and worms do their magic!
How to Build Your Pile (The 1-2-3s!)
- Find a Spot: Pick a flat, shady spot in your yard for your compost bin or pile.
- Layer like a Lasagna: Start with a layer of "Browns" (like dry leaves or twigs), then add a layer of "Greens" (like veggie scraps). Keep layering!
- Add a Little Water: Sprinkle some water on the pile. It should feel like a damp sponge, not a soggy swamp.
- Stir it Up: Every week or two, ask a grown-up to help you mix the pile with a shovel. This gives it air to breathe.
- Wait for the Magic: It takes a few months, but soon you'll have dark, crumbly, sweet-smelling compost for your garden!
Uh Oh! What's Wrong?
Ew, my compost stinks! (Like rotten eggs)
Problem: It's too wet and doesn't have enough air.
Fix: Add more "Browns" (like dry leaves or
newspaper) and mix it all up to let it breathe.
It's not doing anything... it's too dry.
Problem: Your pile is thirsty!
Fix: Sprinkle some water on it until it's damp
like a sponge. Adding more "Greens" (like fruit scraps) helps
too.
I have animals visiting!
Problem: You might be adding "No-Go" items like
meat or cheese, which critters love.
Fix: Stick to only fruits, veggies, and plant
stuff. Make sure your compost bin has a strong lid.
